GEARING UP!
Just wanted to do a quick pre NY Comic Con post to show off some of the goodies we will have at our booth this year. The following are just a few of the many suprises we have lined up for the con this year.

Back by popular demand is everyone's little vampire bat friend Vlad. Vlad has probably been my most asked about character over the years so he figured he'd bring him back for an encore, this time in plush form. Hand sewn fleece fabric with polyester stuffing... extremely huggable!

I will also have new set of resin characters Toil and Trouble, that live in Vlad's world. The pair will make a nice companion piece for all of you Vlad collectors. This set of figures are sculpted and painted by me. You will have the option to buy one, but you will recieve a few dollars off if you buy as a set of two. This is Trouble, I will post pics of Toil as the con grows closer.

Toil and Trouble are witches cats and have the ability to shapeshift. Here Trouble takes on the form of a tiger. I will have a few more detailed versions of the characters like this one that will be priced a little different.

This year I wanted to expand beyond our booth and what better way to do that than to create a mascot costume of one of my characters to wander the comic con crowd. Here are a few pics of the progress of the mascot head I have been working on over the past few days...

I started first by cutting some of these diff sized donut shapes out of the foam.

After layering the shapes I stacked them like a cake and glued them. then I started to round out the edges and smooth out the shape.

after a lot of filing and sanding this is what I came up with. I decided to make My Vlad vampire bat character.

I cut out the mouth shape which is where whoever wears the costume will see out of.

Cut out an area to insert a little cpu fan.

Fits like a glove!

Using polar fleece I started to glue and sew the fabric around the shape, it's really starting to come together now!!!

LA TIMES
Michelle & I just got back from LA a few days ago and I figured I'd share with you guys the pics of our adventures. We flew out for the 2011 Creative Arts Daytime Emmys. We were in town only a few days, but managed to squeeze a lot in. Disneyland, Pacific Park, Malibu, Hollywood, even got to catch a little bit of a U2 concert as we waited for our train outside Anaheim Stadium. We had a blast and it was nice to catch up with some old friends.
As for the awards... we ended up getting edged out by Dora the Explorer in our category, but there's always next year.

COLUMBIA TRIBUNE PROJECT GETS UNDERWAY...
Here are the first few pics of the Columbia restoration.
This bike needed a lot more work than the previous Schwinn. I show you guys all the fun pics, but before any work can be done the bike has to be disassembled and go through a serious clean up. This entails everything from grinding, sanding, steel wool, degreasing, etc. This bike in particular was so rusted in some spots that I actually had to drill out a few bolts and rivets.
Once all that's done the fun begins...
Had to do a little patch work on the fenders. I'm getting pretty good with Bondo. You really have to sand it down as smooth as possible because just the slightest bump, divit, etc shows up in paint. The edges of the fenders were nicked up and rusted bad so I spent a bit of time smoothing and rounding them back out.

Decided to switch up the color a bit on the restoration. Michelle actually picked out this great pistachio color. On both this bike and the Schwinn I wanted to stay fairly close to the original but not get too caught up in to matching the original perfectly. I like to add my own extra touches whether it be paint, accessories, or whatever.

Here is the finished painted fork complete with fork darts!

The fenders cleaned up amazing. You cant even tell there was any patch work done. Here is the rear fender with finished paint.

WINDOW SHOPPING
This post is a little late, but I'm still trying to get caught up. Here is another of my projects from this past winter. This is the winter store display for my girlfriend Michelle's consignment store

Blackbird Attic

This project was a lot of fun. I love decorating for the holidays, and the fact that it was a store display allowed us to go a little over the top.
I painted the tree silhouettes right on the window and then scratched off the line detail with a razorblade. The fabric tree was made out of chicken wire paper and fabric. We got the idea from a store display we had seen online.

I thought it was cool how the tree wrapped around the wall on to the ceiling. Also hung some snowflakes and ornaments from the ceiling.

The idea was to create one warm indoor cozy window and another cold blustery winter wonderland type window. Here is the indoor scene. I built the fireplace from scratch by cutting and reshaping cardboard boxes. Then I spray painted it red, black, and cream for the trim. The brick "mortar" is actually masking tape.

My family is insane about wrapping gifts. They've always been so particular and perfect with their gift presentation. The paper had to be perfectly creased, bows had to be just so, with ornaments and extra flair hanging off of each gift. So I guess this is just a little something I picked up over the years myself.

If you follow my blog you probably recognize a few of the "props" from my bedroom. We took a few things from our woodsy bedroom decor and incorporated them in to this display.

FAT TIRE...
Wow... So much to get caught up on... been slacking on my blogging duties for far too long now. Just got back from LA, but before I get in to any of that I want to do a few posts to get you all caught up on a few of the projects I've been working on over the winter. I've had a bit of time off and had a chance to focus on a few non-animation projects. Since moving out of the city to the Hudson Valley I've found myself more and more picking up new projects/hobbies, just for the simple fact that now I finally have space to work on them. The most recent of these hobbies is bike restorations. I was lucky enough to come across a few great old tank bicycles over the past few months and figured it would be a fun project to restore them. I had no idea how much I would actually enjoy it! I am learning quite a bit, not only about how these bikes work but also about their history. My most recent acquisition was this beautiful early 50's Schwinn Streamliner... Here are a few pics of the restoration...

Here it is in it's original condition before I restored it. At this point I had already taken off the horn tank and the handlebars...

Here I started to mask off and paint the horn tank...

As you can see the bike didn't have fenders when I got it so I had to order some new reproductions which came in solid black. I repainted everything myself using pinstriping tape for some of the tight details...

The seat was pretty destroyed once I started to take it apart...

I wanted to give it new padding and I actually reupholstered it myself using a nice faux leather fabric and some seat foam...

I was without a camera for a good chunk of the restoration, so I'm going to jump straight to the after pictures...
The bicycle was missing a few parts like the rear rack. I tracked down an old 26" Schwinn Ladies Hornet rack which is the same make as was on the Streamliner and painted it to match...

Here is a pic of the chainguard with new paint and decals. I was able to clean up and salvage the skiptooth chain, so I was pretty stoked about that. I swapped out the old beat up pedals with these sweet teardrop ones...

Here's the painted horn tank complete with Schwinn decal...

I was also able to salvage the rims, but it took a ton of work to get them to look this good... there was so much rust and paint that needed to come off...

Flipped the handlebars to give it more of a motorcycle look. The handlebars I swapped out as well because the original seemed to have a bend in them. The ones on the bike now are used and I really had to clean them up to get all of the rust off and give them that shine. The truss rods and clamp are new as well, I believe they are reproductions. Headlamp also new.
Added new grips to top it all off. Once I finish painting the Schwinn headbadge I can throw that on as well

Next time you're in Beacon NY, on your way to visit the DIA art museum be sure to check out the "Welcome To Beacon" sign located on Beekman Street at the entrance of the metro north train station (Beacon stop) just down the street from the DIA. A group of local artists were each given a letter to work their magic. Here are some pics of mine along with a few of the others. My letter "E" was inspired by "Electric Windows" (an art installation project at the end of Main St. where artists have painted large murals which are displayed in the windows of a 19th century factory building.

TIMBER!
Can't get enough of the woods art lately. Here is the beginnings of another piece for my upcoming show in June at Dream in Plastic. Can't wait to get painting these! It's kind of refreshing to work in a new style again. Also on the home decorating front... as you can see I added a new stump to the bedroom. I was walking home from the train a few weeks back and noticed there were a bunch of trees that were cut down/back along the highway. Found this beauty and hauled it all the way up to my place. For those of you that have walked to my place from the train, you know it can be quite a task. It's a super steep trek. Anyways I did a lot of work on it to get it to the state you see it now. I had to saw off a pretty good chunk that was cut unevenly when I found it. I cleaned up both ends an leveled it out. Then I needed to carve out a little sliver of rot that was starting to form. The stump needed to be dried out as well. I wanted to make sure there were no dormant little bugs hanging around too, so it was a long time before I actually felt comfortable bringing the tree in the room. Eventually I may decide to polyurethane the ends, but I just want to make sure it's fully dry 1st.

SKETCHBOT
So this is a little late, but I was part of a custom toy show this past Friday. The paltform was Steve Talkowski's Sketchbot figure. I have been itching to do a little sculpting for a while now, so I figured I'd give it a go and start with something simple. I have kind of been obsessed with this whole woods theme in my art plus I figured since its a robot everyone is going to be doing these really techy customs. So with that in mind I turned Sketchbot in to a tree, ha-ha. Actually I think it was my girlfriends idea originally. I also wanted to put something inside to make the custom more interesting. I picked up one of Nathan Jurevicius's Paleda Owl wind-up toys. It was a little too big to fit inside of Sketchbot, so I disassembled the wind-up mechanism and took a hacksaw to the bottom of the toy to shorten it a bit. Then I painted it and inserted the figure inside of my custom. Anyways here's the finished product, hope you guys like it. Show is up until April 23rd at...

PAINTING THE TOWN!
Here's a few pix from the live painting session I did this past weekend With Dan Weise. The event is a monthly party called Next Step that is held at the Piggy Bank (448 Main St, Beacon New York) The party serves as a fundraiser to help support the Electric Windows art project in Beacon. At the end of the night the painting is auctioned off. It's a fun night of music, dancing, and live art. Here's a link to the Electric Windows site as well...

SUPER SHAPES!
So it's finally here! Team Umizoomi, the show I have been working on for more or less the past 2 years has finally aired. The show is a modge podge of 2d traditional animation, after effects, 3D animation, live action, photo collage, you name it, it's in there. I'm heading up the "drawn" department. There's only 4-5 of us actually doing 2d animation. It's a math based curriculum, teaching numbers, shapes, and patterns. The show follows Milli, Geo, and Bot who are tiny superheroes that help kids solve problems using math. It's a fun show, I know my neice and nephew love it! So check it out if you get a chance weekdays at 11:30 AM on Nickelodeon.

MOVIN' ON UP
So as I mentioned in the previous post, we recently moved. As much as I love the city I was really missing the little luxuries like privacy and space. I've been doing the apartment living thing for probably close to 15 yrs now and it just seemed like time for a change. After lots of research, Michelle came upon the town of Beacon, NY as a contender for the potential move. We visited a few times and absolutely fell in love with the town. Not only is it beautiful nestled between the river and the mountains, but Beacon has a great art scene as well. We're literally right down the street from the DIA!
Since the move, the house has become my new art project. So I figured I'd share a few pics of some of the things we've been doing, enjoy...
So we wanted to do a woods theme room for the master bedroom. The room actually overlooks the mountains, so we were inspired to bring a little of the outdoors, inside.
I ordered a few birch poles on line from this great company that sells birch poles and other lumber that was felled by mother nature. I thought it was kind of nice that they repurpose these fallen trees as opposed to chopping down perfectly healthy ones. Anyways I ordered 5 9' poles that I wanted to stand in the corner of the room to play off this great birch tree wallpaper Michelle found at Anthropologie.

The ceiling is aprox. 8'3", so I had to break out the hacksaw and trim off the excess.

I only wallpapered the one wall as an accent. Didn't want to go too crazy, plus the paper was super expensive, ha-ha.

Yes, I'm THAT anal. I can't stand when pictures are crooked. Also to the left is our oddly placed attic door which I kinda like cuz of its weird placement. I did a faux birch paint on it to tie it in to the rest of the room. Kind of neat cuz it's almost like a framed picture on the wall.

I'd like to sneak a few of these home improvement posts in here in between art posts as we continue to work on the house. I just think it's fun and it serves as a different outlet for my art.

BACK IN ACTION
Wow... It's been a while since I've posted here. Been busy with so many things both art and non-art related. But before I bore you with too many of the details, lets ease back into this blog thing with a quick art post. This June I will be having a solo art show at Dream In Plastic (a gallery/toy store here in Beacon... that's right, Beacon, not Brooklyn... I recently moved, but we'll get in to that in another post.) Anyways, I wanted to go in a new direction for this show, so I decided to venture away from my classic cartoony style and focus on more realistic subject matter. You know, new house, new lifestyle, going for that whole renewal thing, trying to start fresh. Above is my 1st painting/sketch for the show. Keep checking in as I will try to post more regularly and you can follow my process as I prepare for the upcoming show. There's a lot of other cool stuff I have to post here as well, I've been neglecting this blog for far too long.

I recently wrapped on a project for PSYOP and Esquire magazine. The project uses a technology called augmented reality... The editor in cheif of Esquire magazine was on the Today show today explaining how it all works. Check out the clip to hear about the technology and to see my animation. I animated a lot of the Gillian Jacobs joke piece (the second clip shown). Haha, been waitin' for this one! Got interviewed at this years New York Comic Con by Crazy Al Cayne from CAC-TV about our Carney toys & resin & plush projects. This dude is awesome & had me crackin' up. After watching this I've realized my 'umm..." count is pretty ridiculous. NYCC!!!
Comic Con was a blast this year!!! Made lots of new friends. We had a great spot booth #964 right in the second row.
I took tons of pics... but I'll just share w/ you a choice few...

We debuted our NYCC/Web Exclusive Pierce & Nathan print set!

We also showed off the last wave of our Vladimir resin figures which ended up selling out just after the doors opened on day 2 of the con... WOW!

When the Vlads sold out I replaced their spot in the case with this... Samples from y new artist series jewelry I'm designing for Tattooed Steel! ... such a great company!

Argonauts Resin made their name known with some fantastic releases as well.

Erebuni is pleased to present Too Art for TV 3, the third annual group exhibition showcasing the fine art expressions of the animation industry. The widespread appeal of Too Art for TV lies in the pop culture it reflects. Animation artists are experts in robots, superheroes, and the many incarnations of obsessive "geek" pursuits. "Too Art for TV is an exhibition designed to promote and encourage the fine arts in the animation industry. Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible while still keeping the standard of art high. The show includes 25-35 artists and accepts artwork of all media. We've drawn in huge crowds consistently for two years and have gained a modest amount of media attention (very modest). This year we hope to make the show bigger and more spectacular than ever.

Liz Artinian founded the show, curates it, and invests her time, love, and money to support it. All applicants are selected by committee this year. Our committee members are artists in the industry who have been pre-invited to help with the show. This year's committee members (so far) are Kelly Denato, Todd Lown, Christy Karacas, Jared Deal, and Justin Simonich.

SATURDAY AUGUST 23rd is the opening reception for the TRIBUTE TO GYGAX group exhibition.
Over 30 artists have participated in this show honoring the late Gary Gygax, inventor of the game Dungeons and Dragons.

WONKA VISION!!!
Check out the nice write-up Garn & me got in the current issue of Wonka Vision magazine. These guys are great and really did their research! They even got in to the back story of the characters a bit. It's a great mag, so run out to your local Barnes & Noble & grab a copy.
One small correction though... most, if not all of the photos were taken by me on a trip w/ my girlfriend to Coney Island. The magazine credits my sculptor w/ the pics by mistake, haha.

LA WEEKLY!
LA Weekly is featuring an article this week on Sarah Jo Marks titled "THE PLUSH LIFE OF FOOD: A COLLECTOR"S STORY"
It also mentions the "Stuffed" plush foods show that I participted in last Thanksgiving.
It's a great article & they even give me a nod referring to me as the plush Salvador Dali. Haha, they thought my catfish plush was so weird! A few of our other friends are mentioned in the article as well, check it out...

Some new stuff I'm working on for Vinyl Abuse's "Limited Edition" show
The piece with the tiger is titled "Aye Aye of the Tiger"

Limited Edition is a UK based Exhibition organized to raise money in aid of the endanged species around the globe!

The idea started on the VinylAbuse.com forums, where a few members decided to start an exhibition for chairty, and soon tons of artists from all different backgrounds were on board and things began to roll!

Limited edition is not just about raising money though, money can only go so far. It's also about raising awareness of not only how endanged some of these creatures are, but also how important they are to the world's ecostructure. We hope that by bringing these issues to people's attention we can help prevent any more of these amazing creatures from becoming extinct and endangered.
